We coat circuit boards like Picasso

Conformal coating is the application of a thin protective substance onto the surface of a printed circuit board (PCBA). It adapts to the topography of the PCBA and ensures insulation, resistance to chemicals and entry of contaminants. In industries demanding high reliability, such as military, automotive, aerospace, and medical sectors, this procedure is deemed essential.

Primary functions of conformal coating:

  • Safeguarding against electrochemical migration among traces
  • Segregating high-voltage circuits
  • Safeguarding components from moisture and chemicals
  • Shielding boards from the infiltration of dust, dirt, and debris
  • Offering mechanical support for delicate components
  • Electrically insulating both boards and trace conductors
Why Use Conformal Coatings?

Conformal coating improves the durability and longevity of circuitry on printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) when subjected to challenging environmental conditions. Key advantages include:

  • Moisture and Chemical Resistance
  • Contamination Resistance
  • UV Protection
  • Fungus Resistance
  • Electrical Insulation
  • Thermal and Mechanical Shock Protection
  • Corrosion Protection
Conformal Coating Materials

The choice of materials is contingent upon specific requirements like temperature resistance, flexibility, thickness, dielectric properties, etc. Standard coating thickness is 25-75μm. Certain formulations of urethanes and silicones, specifically designed for applying thick coatings, have the capability to be applied in layers measuring several millimeters in thickness.

  • Acrylic
The most common and cost-effective material. Offers commendable resistance to humidity and chemicals. Yields a hard but somewhat brittle film upon curing.
  • Silicone
Exhibits outstanding temperature resistance and flexibility. Resistant to humidity, chemicals, radiation, and fungus. Features a softer coating that is more prone to cuts and abrasions.
  • Urethane
Presents a robust, abrasion-resistant, and flexible coating. Demonstrates good resistance to humidity and chemicals. Can be applied in a thick layer without running or sagging.
  • Epoxy
Forms a hard, rigid, and durable coating layer. Exhibits excellent resistance to chemicals and moisture. Withstands high temperatures, reaching up to 200°C.
  • Parylene
Applied through vapor deposition, ensuring uniform coverage on all surfaces. Shows exceptional penetration into confined spaces. Possesses inert, biocompatible, transparent, and flexible properties.
  • Other:
    Paraxylylene (a variant of parylene)
Silicones blended with epoxy or urethane
Incorporation of fillers like Teflon or silicone dioxide

Application methods

We can also offer different application methods such as manual brushing, dipping, conformal coating spray, selective coating spray, auto-jet spray and vapor deposition.

Conformal Coating Inspection

We always verify the coating quality and coverage. Typical inspection methods include visual inspection, coating thickness measurement, cross-section analysis and microsectioning.
